My chemistry told … My chemistry told me this too. If you watch the Mythbusters video: Threequel Part 2, you’ll find out that reaction was nowhere as explosive as the one in this video.
In fact, I’m supposed to write a journal on the validity of those two videos for chemistry homework. The comment you made will definitely be taken into consideration.
@mjt510 I’m pretty … @mjt510 I’m pretty sure that you also did lithium (due to the fact that its the least dangerous) but we were also allowed to handle potassium (at small doses of course
)
We handled … We handled Magnesium and Calcium in science class – grade 9 academic. We may have also done Lithium, and I doubt we did Sodium, but I can’t be sure. We did see live the effects of potassium, and it didn’t react anything like the clip at the start at 33 seconds.

No. They are alkaline batteries, not alkali. They are filled with manganese dioxide and zinc powder.
If you cut open a lithium battery, however, there is a pure lithium strip in there that you can use.

But what really happened? Brainiac’s Dr Bunhead claims: “Absolutely bloody nothing. The density of caesium ensured it hit the bottom of the bath like a lead weight. The sheer volume of water then drowned out the thermal shock-wave I was expecting to shatter the bath. They could not go home empty handed. So they rigged a bomb in the bottom of the bath and then blew the out of it. I must say it did look cool… [It] ate away at my conscience. But I couldn’t do anything about it.
Sorry to ruin your … Sorry to ruin your fun, but Braniac actually admitted to using dynamite in this demonstration because cesium alone was not as dramatic as what they expected.
Thanks for the demo … Thanks for the demo on K, Rb, Cs. We are covering the alkali metals in my chemistry class and i did a demo of Na and Li in water but I think the kids will get a real understanding of the increased reactivity of the alkalies farther down the group. Thanks again and please do post some more experiments.

I think thats only certain isotopes of Cesium. Don’t think they would play around with so loosly if it had been radioactive.

They forgot to mention something about Cesium; IT IS HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE!!!
anyway, nice job

OMFG LOL awesome!
OMFG LOL awesome!
They did not …
They did not actually use Cesium. Instead they used a stick of dynamite to simulate the effects of Cesium in water.

Our class has only done Sodium, Lithium and Potassium, but only like 1 gram.
