What has cause the change in metal music over the past few decades?

In my anthropology class I have decided to look at the history of metal, specifically the changes that have occurred, and try to say why metal music has changed, try to find the common link between the decades and such. Any ideas on how to start? I have a few ideas but this is turning out harder than I thought.

hold on , I’ll start that novel shortly

I suggest you associate metal’s timeline with the scenes…it would make it much easier such as…

Bay Area Thrash Metal Scene (80′s)———————–Aggressive Speed

Teutonic (German) Thrash Metal Scene (80′s)————–Melodic Speed

Florida/New york Death Metal scenes (late 80′s – early 90′s)—-Brutality

Sweden’s Melodic/ Gothenburg Scene (late 80′s – early 90′s) Brutality combined with Melody

Norwegian Black Metal Scene (late 80′s – early 90′s)——-Darkness

As you can see metal doesn’t only change over time but with scenes as well…culture definitely has an impact on metal!
These are just a few examples….go rent Headbanger’s Journey
