Is it the vocals, the image or the lyrics. Because there are horror movies that have images far worse or at least equivalent to the lyrics in death metal. And most would be shocked to learn that alot of death metal musicians are educated and very intelligent and have jobs like the rest of us. Give me some straight answers here.
Id have to say that for a lot of people its the perception of "evil" (me not being one of those people). I do like some death metalish bands but most seem to have an incomprehensible beat that just kinda sounds like slamming on instruments and most of the screaming in death metal is (in my opinion) just obnoxious sounding and totally lacking in melody.

I think that it is because a lot of people love catchy tunes that they can sing…with death metal is a little hard to know what the artist is saying, so most people cant sing it when it is stuck in their heads lol

I’m guessing its just the style of the music, not everyone likes the who yelling part (at least my parents hate it when it’s playing in my car). Also the image is straightly related to the devil, so people might feel offended by it.

generally the image, people know that horror movies are all fake and just for entertainment but the average person actually believes death metal musicians are sick fuckers who go around killing people or atleast dream of killing people when in reality they are no different to say a horror movie director or writer. they think of a cool idea that involves death and they vocalize it or show it to the world. for filmakers its obviously in their films whereas death metallists use their songs and lyrics to display it

It’s not just Death Metal that is off-putting, it is any music that has progressed beyond the innocent, boppy, easily-digestible, radio pop music that philistines listen to. BDM is an extreme genre, and it is okay for audiophiles not to love it, but most can appreciate the musicianship of these groups. Most people however, are fapping buckets for their Greenday CD collection, and are so enthusiastic every time Lady Gaga releases a new single. I find it amazing that these people are pleased so easily.
Therefore, most people hate it because they hear "RAWR, RAWR, RAWR" and dismiss it immediately. It is mostly ignorance.

Its the vocals. They have the same image as any other hard rock band. And the fact i they worship satan is ridiculous, there is a thing called Christian Death Metal. And most people can’t understand the lyrics, and dismiss it, so that can’t be it. The average person wants to hear sung words , with a simple repetitive beat. Anything more than verse chorus, verse, bridge, verse is too complicated. I think of the death growl as an instrument as opposed to singing. It blends well with fast drums, and low guitars. Plus the distortion, and blast beats are unappealing to the average person. My GF likes some of the music for the most part in some of the progressive dm and technical dm bands I listen to, but she hates the vocals. She mostly listens to Pop music (rap, country, alt rock, etc) but I turned her onto ISIS. Maybe not straight up Death Metal, but it’s better than having to listen to Lady Gaga, Rap, and country.

Well, it’s probably not the lyrics, because they are unintelligible. (Unless you have the lyrics with you) It’s more about the vocals; average, boring as fuck people don’t like guttural/screaming vocals 24/7. I have to admit, some Brutal Death Metal can actually be really catchy and entertaining to listen to.
The drumming is incredibly talented, so many Death Metal drummers are underrated. Guitarists can either be awesome, or repetitive, it depends on the band. Bass is either non existent, or is mind blowing.
But why am I talking about Death Metal if I listen to Nu Metal? You all think that Nu Metal is fucking shit.
