Is it better to wear pure metals like silver or gold instead of steel or surgical steel?

Posted by admin on June 17th, 2010 and filed under metals | 2 Comments »

I don’t want to get an allergic reaction and get an infection. I heard that if you just wear pure metals then you get allergic to other metals for earrings.

i know that lots of people can only wear a particular pure metal (like gold) or their ears turn green or something lol :P

but i have never heard that wearing only one type will make you allergic to others…anyway, sergical steel or stainless steal is meant to be fine for piercings because its sterile.

the only metals you have to watch out for are the tacky ones that have just been COATED in silver or paint.

dont stress, just wear what you listed about and steer clear of any cheap rip offs and you should be fine :)

What metals and gem stones are associated with the sea, in any culture?

Posted by admin on June 6th, 2010 and filed under metals | 3 Comments »

I am creating a character for a story, and I am designing a knife. So far I have a Laguiole (French) knife with a stylized flying fish instead of an insect, made of titanium with a mother of pearl handle carved with waves. In my mind it looks somewhat plain, and I was wondering what I could use to spice it up. BTW, the character is based off of the sea. If you wish to suggest stones, metals, or woods associated with any of the other elements (fire, air, earth are the ones I am using), go ahead.

Correspondences I’ve picked up over the years, mostly Celt.

Water: Metal – Silver; Jewels – Aquamarine, Beryl, Pearl, Moonstone and River Pebbles; Plants – Fern, Lotus, Water Lily; Tree (Wood) – Willow.

Earth: Metal – Lead; Jewels – Granite, Holystone, Jasper; Quartz, Salt; Plants – Apples, Ivy, Grain; Tree (Wood) – Oak.

Air: Metal – Aluminum, Mercury; Jewels – Chalcedony, Lapis Lazuli, Sapphire, Topaz; Plants – Pansy, Primrose, Vervain, Violet, Yarrow; Tree (Wood) – Aspen.

Fire: Metal – Gold, Iron; Jewels – Fire Opal, Fire Agate, Ruby, Obsidian; Plants – Garlic, Hibiscus, Nettles, Onions; Tree (Wood) – Almond.

How can I sort out different metals?

Posted by admin on May 29th, 2010 and filed under metals | 1 Comment »

I have a big bag of small pieces of metal. I am most interested in finding out which ones are aluminium, but would also like to identify the other metals. I have already sorted the pieces by magneticism. What else can I do?

is this a hypothetical situation, or a real situation? well, aluminum is a pretty light metal, that can bend easily. it is a very light metallic color also.
