Which is better for cutting metal roofing?

Never done any metal roofing before and would like to put one on my house myself, thing is I don’t know which is better metal shears or metal nibbler? Also anyone who does this for living give me make and model of which one you found best to work for you would help too.

I have found a nibbler to be much better for longer cuts, it distorts the sheets of standing seam roofing much less than a shear. It also produces less sharp edges, when kept in good operating condition.

Use a high quality mastic/caulking where your valleys make their transitions, and use great care around skylights and stink pipes. They are the most common places that leaks occur.

Also, you should use a 1/2" foam backer rod under the center of each piece of roofing (unless it is the corrugated type). The backer rod will prevent wrinkling in the sheet metal as the temperature changes throughout the day and seasons.

Don’t forget this tool as well. It makes it so you can fold back the bottom edge of your roof (not to mention the many other places where edges need to be folded like on the ends of the ridge piece) to add both strength and safety, you don’t want to cut your hands every time you reach into the gutters to clean them out, instead you will contact a rolled edge.

anyone with metal roofing trouble ?

we had a metal roof instaled 7 years ago. every fall we get up there and tighten the screws. they have backed out 1/4 to a half inch !! we do this at least once a year. we have a temp spread here of 25 degrees f. ( sometimes colder) and up to 110 in the summer.. the roof is dark green.. we still get an occasional leak it drives us wild.. any ideas ?? thanks

not enough info on what the roof is attached to. sounds like you have an expansion material between whatever the metal is fastened to. if so there should have been a sleeve over the screw so that the connecton has no play.

How do I calculate how many pieces of metal roofing I need for my hip roof?

We are building a house in South America. It is 47ft x 30 ft and will have a hip roof (8 or 10 ft. pitch). We are trying to figure out how much metal roofing we will need to cover it. Does anyone know of an online calculator or website where I can input the dimensions and it tell me how much metal roofing we will need? Or at least the dimensions of each of the sides of the hip roof? Thanks!

according to roof plan all the valleys and narrow section plus end of the roof edges all around and any connection to the wall if there’s any ,need to be sealed by metal roof .If roof is a simple gamble roof only end roof edges and top of the roof on the ridge board.
